If you are going to be all that God has called you to be, you have to understand that you have to get on His terms of width & depth.
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3: 12-14
Doesn’t it sometimes feel like doing what God is calling us to do sets us back? We get so focused on width that we miss out on depth. What if you & I are so concerned with our width that we bypass the depth that is necessary to sustain it? Think of your width as your influence and your depth as your character. The influence we are reaching for is nothing compared to the influence that God has for us.
The width of your influence is subject to the depth of your character. The width of your life is directly correlated to the depth of what God is doing in you. Before your world will grow bigger, it has to become smaller. What if God loves you so much that He is far more invested in your character than you are understanding of it?
1. Don’t sell your width while God is investing in your depth.
We often settle for the width that is in front of us, while God is trying to do something in us by growing our depth. Are you so caught up in "the now" that you are forfeiting "the later"?
You have to take time and redefine width. We can become so width-oriented and so caught up doing what is actually God’s job that we forget to do ours. Don’t get so caught up in your personal width that you miss out on the width that Heaven has for you. God is in control, and your season is your season and God’s got it.
If you haven’t heard from God recently, go back to the last place that you heard from Him. The moment we move outside of His plan is the moment we create bigger problems for Him to have to fix later. Don’t sell the influence that God has for you. The cross that Jesus died on calls us to live a dangerous life. and that's a life fully trusting in Jesus. Don’t ever think that God is not in in the midst of your depth. One of the most powerful things you can do is to not to sell your width while God is still investing in your depth.
2. Be depth conscious and with aware.
Be aware of your influence. Be aware of your calling. Know that they are there and run for them with full force. Make sure your consciousness of your depth is greater than your awareness of your width.
How many of us have not run for the things God has called us to because they make no sense? God is doing something in you, but you have to understand that there is His job and then there is our job. Let God be conscious of your width while you be conscious of your depth. Don’t try to handle what only God can truly handle.
All that has to happen will happen. Ask God where He is building depth. God does something beautiful with the spaces we call broken. We have to lay our ways down and pick up His. Let your relationship with Jesus run deeper. A God who loves you is more interested in your growth than He is your comfort. Let’s let go of the width and start concentrating on the depth.
